The UK Government has today published its vision for the energy retail market. Frustratingly this did not include the consultation on targeted price support (a social tariff), which Government has committed to publishing.

Maria Booker, Head of Policy at Fair By Design, said:

“Today the Government published policy papers setting out its vision for energy market reforms, yet it did not make good on its promise to consult in time to have a social tariff in place for April 2024.

“This is very disappointing as just last week we joined industry, Citizens Advice, MoneySavingExpert and National Energy Action in calling on the Government to look at bill support as a matter of urgency.

“There is broad consensus that proper, long-term protection for vulnerable and low-income consumers is needed for winter and beyond. We urge Government to publish its consultation on targeted price support to help the poorest households afford energy when the Energy Price Guarantee comes to an end next year.”
