I’ve been a Fair by Design ambassador since 2018, falling into activism by accident after responding to an online survey hosted by Gingerbread regarding credit card debt and the need for “breathing space” on excessive interest charges.
From this, I got the opportunity to speak in Westminster at the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Poverty, talking about my experience of raising a family as a disabled lone parent. From this, in 2018 I featured in a short film on the Poverty Premium, which was aired at fringe events at party conferences.
I am passionate about tackling the injustice of poverty as too many folk are being swept into poverty due to lack of political will and an inadequate welfare safety net forcing them into making impossible choices when providing for themselves and their families. It needn’t be that way.
WHEN I’M NOT CAMPAIGNING
I volunteer with myelopathy.org and a myelopathy support group on Facebook, helping those like me who have been diagnosed and left disabled with Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy. I also help out at my local talking newspaper for people with visual impairments. I am mum to three boys – two fully grown, and am an unabashed pet lover, living with one dog, two cats and six rabbits – all rescue animals.
