The Hartlepool Action Lab brings together local people and organisations to develop solutions to poverty. We gather people, ideas, energy and resources together to take action to make Hartlepool a more affordable, better place to live.

Where is your project based?

Hartlepool, Teesside

What problem are you solving?

We used Community Research to find out what could help make life affordable for local people. Action Lab events worked on the key issues – food, fuel and benefits – to create working solutions. One of the solutions are pop-up Food & Fuel Fairs in community settings.

How do you do this?

Food & Fuel Fairs connect people with agencies that can help put money into people’s pockets – benefits, fuel switching, welfare payments, water meters etc. They provide free food, using recipes written and cooked by volunteers using slow cookers. We also provide people with slow cookers to support healthy, low cost eating.

What difference are you making?

Food & Fuel Fairs have put money into people’s pockets, made supportive connections for people, created friendships and helped people to eat more healthily and affordably. Those using slow cookers say they are saving an average of £10 per week on their food bills.
