Fair By Design welcomes the Chancellor’s announcement of £2 billion to improve household energy efficiency through ‘Green Homes Grants.’

Under the voucher scheme, households on the lowest incomes can receive up to £10,000 towards energy efficiency improvements, such as loft or cavity wall insulation, without having to contribute towards the costs.

People on low incomes are more likely to live in energy inefficient homes – often privately rented – paying a poverty premium through a combination of having to use more heating and  being on expensive (standard variable) energy tariffs.

The Covid-19 lockdown has acted as an extra current drawing people under, through reduced incomes and higher utility bills because of more time spent at home.

Improving the energy efficiency of their homes will go some way to reducing energy bills in the long term, and help people stay afloat.
